Electric Brakes for Elevator Modernization

Hilliard’s electric brakes for elevator modernization are spring applied / electrically released secondary (emergency) brakes. They transmit torque through the torque arm into the anti-rotation block and machine frame, or through a disc (depending on configuration and application requirements). They are mounted either directly to the drive shaft/sheave (multi-disc plate brake) or act on a disc attached to the drive shaft/sheave (MK caliper disc brake). Both brake types include a manual release feature for use during power failure.

Designed for OEM and aftermarket modernization, these brakes meet ASME A17.1 requirements and are intended for two safety conditions only: ascending car overspeed (ACO) and unintended car movement (UCM) with the car and hoist way doors open. They are not intended as primary service brakes, for routine stopping at floor levels, or for activation by other safety devices.

HOW IT WORKS

How Does Industrial Braking System Work?

Hilliard delivers high-performance braking solutions specifically engineered for elevator modernization. Our Spring Applied / Electric Released Brakes engage automatically during power loss and release electrically for reliable, fail-safe operation. Built with heavy-duty steel components, epoxy-potted coils, and adjustable wear compensation, they offer torque ratings from 7.5 to 4,500 lb-ft and voltage options from 6 VDC to 240 VDC. These brakes are ideal for retrofit projects requiring enhanced safety, reduced downtime, and extended service life.

Our MK Rail & Disc Brakes feature a simple, direct-acting design with a single moving part, ensuring low maintenance and dependable performance. Spring-applied and electrically released, MK brakes provide precise holding and emergency stopping capabilities. They are configurable for various rail and disc sizes and include manual release bolts and microswitches for brake status monitoring. Both braking systems are engineered to deliver superior safety, customizable performance, and seamless integration into modernized elevator platforms. Trust Hilliard’s proven expertise to enhance the reliability and safety of your elevator modernization projects.

Why Does Brake Performance Matter?

Protects People, Equipment, and Processes

In braking applications, performance is not just about stopping motion. It is about maintaining control, reducing risk, preventing runaway conditions, and protecting operators, equipment, and throughput. Hilliard consistently positions their brakes around safety, reliability, and performance in demanding environments.

Supports Fail-Safe Operation

Many of Hilliard’s brake designs are spring-applied, meaning the brake engages when power is removed. That fail-safe design is important in elevators, conveyors, marine propulsion systems, cranes, and other applications where uncontrolled motion can create serious safety and operational issues.

Improves Serviceability and Life Cycle Performance

The brochures also emphasize easy adjustment, pad replacement, manual release features, monitoring options , and maintenance- friendly design detail. These advantages can reduce downtime, simplify service, and help equipment owners get longer life from the braking system.

Enables Better Application Fit

Brake performance depends on more than one component. Torque requirements, disc size, release method, environmental exposure, mounting geometry, and controls all affect system performance. Hilliard’s product range and custom support make it easier to align the brake system with the real operating demands of the machine.
