Hilliard Starter Clutch Drives
Hilliard High-Speed Starter Overrunning Clutch Drive
Delivering Positive Engagement and High Torque on Demand
Hilliard Starter Clutch Drives are designed to transmit starting torque from the starter system to the engine while supporting automatic disengagement once the engine reaches operating speed. Engineered for gas turbine and reciprocating engine applications, these drives provide positive engagement and high torque capability during the startup sequence.
Featuring Hilliard’s roller-ramp clutch design, the Starter Clutch Drive is engineered to support reliable torque transmission while protecting starter system components after engine startup. The assembly is available for a variety of turbine and engine starting applications requiring dependable engagement performance.

Hilliard Starter Clutch Drive Key Features:
Positive Engagement Design
Provides reliable engagement between the starter system and engine during startup.
High Torque Transmission
Engineered to transmit high torque loads required for turbine and engine starting applications.
Roller-Ramp Clutch Technology
Utilizes Hilliard’s roller-ramp clutch design for controlled engagement and overrunning operation.
Integrated Bearing Support
Ball bearings at each end of the roll cage support and align the cam relative to the drive shaft.
Automatic Overrunning Operation
Allows the drive to disengage automatically once engine speed exceeds starter speed.
HOW IT WORKS
Transferring Starting Torque While Allowing Automatic Disengagement
Starter clutch drives serve as the mechanical link between the starter system and the engine during startup. When engaged, torque is transmitted through the clutch assembly to rotate the engine and initiate the starting sequence.
As engine speed increases beyond starter speed, the overrunning clutch function allows the drive to disengage automatically. This prevents the running engine from back-driving the starter system while protecting starter components from excessive rotational speeds.

Positive Starter Engagement
Transmits torque from the starter system to the engine during startup.
High Torque Capability
Supports demanding turbine and reciprocating engine starting requirements.
Automatic Overrunning Function
Disengages once engine speed exceeds starter speed.
Starter System Protection
Helps prevent back-driving of starter components after startup.
The Hilliard Starter Clutch Drive utilizes a roller-ramp mechanism that locks during startup to transmit torque through the clutch assembly. Once the engine accelerates beyond starter speed, the clutch transitions into overrunning operation, allowing the engine and starter system to rotate independently.
